Scurrilous

Scurrilous \SKUR-uh-luhs\ , adjective;
1. Grossly or obscenely abusive
2. Characterized by or using low buffoonery

The origin of scurrilous is French scurrile ("coarsly joking") and it was first attested in the 1570's. Scurrile comes from Latin scurrilis ("buffoonlike") from scurra ("fashionable city idler," later "buffoon").
